Critical Studies in Sound for Moving Image Tuesday 08/10/2019
In this week of Critical Studies, we went over the rules and the process of handing in the work for the first project brief and how to hand them in and we also went over the requirements for them, this was discussed in the weekly briefing. We then went into the start of the critical studies class, this week we went into looking at Classic Hollywood and Soviet Cinema, we looked at what is and how they classed certain pieces of works and films as Melodrama's, Montages and Realism. Looking at classical Hollywood narratives, early cinema and into what is and makes certain works Imagists, Expressionism and Soviet Montages. we also looked into and was really interesting to see how movies and productions were like from both sides and how life was like during the years of Hollywood in the 1930's and how it was like for Soviets in the 1920's. We looked at materials from both and how they both were in many ways connected by the way they do certain things and how many similarities can be seen and i found it very interesting to see how things were done back then and the rules that were placed to do them, some being reasonable and others being a bit far out and thinking how many rules wouldn't stand for nowadays but were a normal thing back then.
Hollywood did use many types of arts in their movies and had certain specific troupes in their movies, such as a single main protagonist, whilst in Soviet cinema montages, they focused on a number and a wide range of people and population of characters in their movies instead of focusing on just the one, i thought that was good and possibly helped the beginning of companies in the future following this, not as much as the Soviets did back then but instead of one, a good number of main characters that are from different backgrounds, sex's and age's. The Soviet Montages of the 1920's are viewed as some of the most innovative of the era's and many of their troupes, techniques and styles can still be linked and connected to this date. We looked into what is and was the Kuleshov Effect - 1921. This showed us and went into detail of showing us the demonstration of the editing power over the viewers sense of space during that piece.
We also went into the the History of the rise of the Soviets Resolutions, the movies made during those times had and were intentionally made to give and continue the movements during those times, a movie piece we looked into, Battleship Potemkin. Looked at directors such as Sergei Eisenstein, Vertov - Man with a Movie Camera 1929.
Trainspotting was used as a good example on how montages can be used as the opening of the movie was and went through a montage as it in ways set up the main characters, the style and theme of the movie, one of the characters was doing a narrative over it. Other good example we looked into to show how modern movies use the techniques of montages, Disney's Pixar's movie, UP, was a very good movie and set up such a string and very emotional montage at the start to show the main character, what the theme was and how the rest was going to be maybe like.

In this lecture we looked into radio and how it fully came about and what its first intentions and uses for it and what the idea of it original use and what it was used for, shown how effectively it was and how after its original use, what it then moved onto. It was really interesting to know and learn this because i had always wondered how certain things came about and what they were first intended to be used for and who by. We also delved into learning about Soundscapes more and how to plan and make them, this was to refresh us who are used to them but to refresh our memories and for those who haven't made a soundscape before, this was effective to prepare us for our first assessment brief.
